Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism (Grant position)

Purpose: The editor of Arab Media and Society (AMS) assists the managing editor with publications including reports, monographs, and any additional related output. Additionally, the editor assists in identifying papers that provide new, original, and important contributions to knowledge. The editor will provide recommendations regarding which articles to accept or reject for publication and ensure overall quality of the intellectual content of the journal. The editor will work with the executive assistant to the director of Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism on content disseminated from the center to promote the activities of the center.

Principal Accountabilities:

The individual will be required to fulfill a variety of tasks related to the consistent production and dissemination of content in both online and print formats. This includes but is not limited to:

·Working with the managing editor and editorial staff to publish biannual issues of AMS online and in print (January and June). This includes peer-reviewed scholarship, research articles, columns, conference and book reviews

·Reading through and editing the work of contributors to all relevant sections

·Involved in the preparation of print edition including layout and editing. Liaising with print shop for final product

·Continuing process of seeking greater international recognition, particularly through indexing, impact factor, signing with a publisher, and international distribution

·Supervising and contributing to social media presence by actively sharing our original content, related content, and participating and encouraging online discussion

·The editor will see that the journal follows customary ethical policies for scholarly publishing

·Ensuring successful distribution and dissemination of content including print distribution (AUC Press and Bookstores and online sales) and online engagement via web traffic and social media

·Assist the managing editor in actively seeking out opportunities for new projects and collaborations, to increase impact and recognition of the Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism, School of Global Affairs and Public polices, and AUC as a whole

·Maintain, with the managing editor, consistent communication and collaboration with the journal’s network of international scholars to ensure reach and quality of output

·Be actively involved in organizing events, symposia, and conferences (when funding permits), including periodic lectures, and two symposia annually related to the corresponding issue’s theme

·Maintain, with the managing editor, site so it is dynamic and remains user friendly and engaging

·Actively growing AMS’s network of scholars, journalists, writers, organizations, graduate students, and other interested parties to expand our reach and diversify our content as much as possible

·Working with the executive assistant to Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism director and the communications office to promote the center and develop promotional material for content and events

Requirements:

Minimum Education Requirement:   

· A master degree in communications, journalism, media, social sciences, or a related field

Experience:

·Five to seven years working in journalism, publishing, or a related field. Two years in a managerial role.

Skills:

·Some knowledge of editorial processes in both academia and journalism. Understanding of publishing industry standards and norms. Strong understanding of relevant regional and global dynamics and global and regional media landscape. Understanding of social media strategies and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Native speaker level English, strong knowledge of Arabic a distinct asset.
