Duties and Responsibilities:
1.The Resident shall carry out the clinical and other duties allocated to him/her by the Chief of Department.
2.The Resident shall check all admissions including cases admitted from the Emergency Room and OPD. A full history physical examination shall be carried out, paying attention to the patient past health and current general health, meticulously documenting all details. Relevant routine and special laboratory tests as appropriate shall be ordered. Written orders to the Nurses shall be given. The process of evaluating the patients under his/her care, formulating plans of investigation and treatment is accordingly to the level of responsibility achieved at the particular time.
3.The Resident shall take on-call duty according to the departmental duty Rota. He/ She shall be the first on-call for all emergency cases necessitating his department and for all inpatients in his department requiring urgent attention after the usual morning rounds. He/She shall take special care of high –risk patient (e.g. critically ill, postoperative, etc.) and shall immediately notify the Consultant of any complications.
4.The Resident on-call shall always inform the Consultant about the case to be admitted after having evaluated the patient and obtained the pertinent laboratory data. If the case is urgent the Resident shall immediately inform the Consultant after preliminary evaluation and before laboratory results are obtained.
5.The Resident shall be present in the hospital at all times during his/her assigned on-call duty, and must not under any circumstance leave until he/she is relieved by the incoming on-call or another Resident. When not on-call or officially off-duty, he/she shall be present in the hospital during normal working hours (7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and assist his/her assigned Consultant.
6.The Resident shall endorse his/her on-call activities including admissions, critical cases, etc. to the incoming Resident on-call in the ROTA personally either one to one or during the daily morning departmental meeting.
7.The Resident shall visit patient daily, document daily progress notes and orders. All notes shall be signed, dated and stamped with time noted. These will be reviewed and initialed by the treating Consultant on the same day.
8.The Resident shall accompany the Consultant he/she is assigned to at the discretion of the Chief of the Department. This includes ward rounds and outpatient clinic.
9.The Resident shall ensure that the appropriate informed consent is obtained for any intervention including certain radiological procedures, endoscopic procedures, instrumental delivery, surgery, etc. according to the policies and procedures of the hospital and his/her department.
10.The Resident shall assist the Consultant during procedures and can perform procedures appropriate to his/her level of experience, under the supervision of the consultant.
